19. When the Going Gets Weird

I didn't tell Gabe where he could shove his unwelcome opinion, although I promise you I wanted to. I just nodded.

Raph looked at Gabe as though he wasn't all that sure of the other angel's sanity. I couldn't help agreeing with him. I wasn't sure of my sanity either. It hadn't been a good day.

Gabe only shook his head. "Are there any other complications we need to account for?" He looked straight at me.

Of course. As if I was the leader of this motley collection. I met his dark eyes and deliberately didn't look away -- and yes, I wanted to. Gabe looked at me as though he was examining my soul. "Drake and Marlowe were turned by the vampire who's failing to keep his latest protégé controlled." That was something else that couldn't be explained gently. "The hints I've got are that the mongrel was an elder then, so if he decides to play tonight things could get interesting."

Which was, of course, putting it mildly. I had no idea who the elder was, much less if I was stronger than he or not. Hell, any vampire who makes it through five centuries or so is a challenge. You learn how to hang on in that time.

I might be able to take out the elder, but whether I could take him while he used Drake and Marlowe against me was a different question altogether. After Lee, I was off balance, not entirely sure of myself. That meant I'd make mistakes.

Something that wasn't precisely a smile curled Gabe's lips. "I see why your timing is an issue," he said in a dry voice. "The confusion such an attack would cause could be awkward."

I raised an eyebrow. "You might lose your renegade, you mean." The angel might like dancing around with words, but I didn't need it. I had enough trouble.

Sean snickered.

Raph looked up as though he expected support. Given Himself Above's sterling record so far, I didn't think he'd get any. "Do you mind?"

"Not in the least." I shrugged. "I'd rather have this in the open. We're faded so unless you start smiting the ungodly we can speak openly." When this convention was over, I was going to need to spend some serious time examining the changes in me. This wasn't the way I'd wanted to find out why my village elders had been so adamant that my kind should only drink from each other or humankind.

I hadn't planned on ever finding out, actually. I'd accepted their insistence that it was a bad thing, and left it at that. Not, I might add, that I disagreed with them. Finding myself with abilities I'd never had in the past wasn't something I particularly enjoyed.

Gabe seemed to find my bluntness amusing, because he just shook his head and turned to Raph. "Perhaps you should speak. You are more direct than I."

I had the definite impression that Gabe was the senior angel, and he'd given an order with that polite request.
